I mean I like my COD first person shooter game as much as the next nerd but this really shows how mainstream video games have become. From the article: 'The Jeep brand today announced it has been named exclusive automotive partner by Activision for Call of Duty: Black Ops, and that they're making a COD Jeep. Hitting show floors next month, this limited-edition Jeep Wrangler will be available for a MSRP of $30,625 for the two-door model and $33,500 for the four-door.     Jeep has a New Mountain Edition with 32" rubber and decals. Change the decals and maybe the badging, and you've got the [description of the] CoD model. In other news, all get estimated 15mpg city and 19mpg highway. I get like 15 mpg in my ~6600 lb. 1992 F250 while towing a trailer and I have more ground clearance too what with the 4" lift. Jeep fail.

      I don't think you realize they aren't marketing this to you. They expect to sell this to ignorant people who like COD. Most of whom I expect won't tow anything, don't care about ground clearance---streets are flat for the most part, and have money.

        • I'm looking at the photo of an SUV. I'm counting the doors. The "4 door model" has a sticker price listed. And, I'm thinking about the old Kaiser that I drove as a young man. It was 4 door, if you counted the hood, the tailgate, and both doors - IF the doors were on. Real men and real jeeps don't need no stinking doors. The only thing in that photo that even vaguely says "Jeep" to me, is the grill. And, it's not quite right.

    • the Jeeps short wheelbase is never good for towing.. its not an F250, not in the same class at all.. so its pointless to compare.. only thing that comes to mind that makes a fair comparison is LandRover, Toyota FJ and maybe some short wheelbase FX4's. Jeeps are Jeeps... they have gotten a little more soccer-mom-ish recently.. that being said the Wrangler JKs (2007+) are one of the most offroad capable production jeeps around.. the Rubi edition has electric lockers and electric swaybar disconnects.. they e

      As others have stated:

      Jeep Wranglers are built for rock-crawling, not towing. They have, in general, high gear ratios (good for rocks, bad for mileage) and a short wheelbase (Despite a lower clearance on paper, they're probably less likely to hit a rock than your F250.)

      Oh, yeah, you needed a 4" lift to get more ground clearance than the stock Jeep - what was your clearance stock, and do you realize that Jeeps have lift kits available too? (Some probably far more aggressive than your 4" lift.)

      • Also, the comparison was between a 1992 vehicle and a 2011 vehicle. The emissions requirements are drastically different, and the design constraints imposed by the emissions requirements reduces fuel efficiency. The new Jeep may burn a big more gas, but it emits much less pollution.

      • Neither my truck nor this Jeep is built for rock crawling, although either one can be made a rock crawler. I would prefer an older, lighter Jeep with a smaller engine for that purpose; likewise, a non-Diesel pickup, or at least a non-Ford, because I have the heaviest light pickup engine EVAR. Or if not, then damned close.

        The Jeep has shit economy, that's what I'm bitching about. They can do better while maintaining emissions by moving to a smaller engine.

          I would worry about the front suspension and the gearing on that Nissan before even considering the engine. With a crawl ratio of 70:1 or better, the engine doesn't really matter that much.

        It's a copy of the Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition. A modern Chrysler SUV in the style of a Jeep. It's hardly built for "rock crawling". At best, it's moderately capable of general off-roading, and going over slightly bumpy things. i.e. running down gentle off-highway trails--presumably to get to campgrounds, other outdoorsy sporting activities etc. More precisely, however, it's built to give other people the impression you might like to do these sort of fun things, when in reality most Jeep owners are hardl

        • Yeah, modern Jeeps are mostly just crossovers (large cars) that only look like the old, actually offroad-capable Jeeps.

          If you want REAL offroading ability for cheap, buy a used 2nd gen Samurai. The amount of abuse those things can take is insane and they have basically infinite modification potential. Get bigger tires, a lift kit and a pair of lockers and it will be unstoppable - not fast, that's a whole different problem (that can be solved with a huge variety of engine swap options) - but unstoppable.

            Are you retarded? How many vehicles come with solid axles front & rear, coil suspension, and have options for locking diffs and a 4:1 transfer case? Today's stock Jeep will floor anything Jeep has ever made in the past, as well as pretty much any other stock vehicle available. And as for that 2nd gen Samurai... by the time you're done it's not a Samurai anymore.

            • A few other offroad-capable vehicles are available with those things, but most of those aren't sold in the US. The Land Rover Defender, Mahindra PikUp, and the Nissan Patrol utility pickup are a few, plus there are old vehicles still in production in certain countries like the older Hiluxes and Maruti Samurais.

              Sure Jeep still makes the Rubicon Wrangler, and the standard Wrangler has potential, but they're expensive new vehicles that are unnecessarily heavy (and with a larger footprint), and while they might

                To match the capability of a Jeep Rubicon Wrangler, you will need a low range t-case and lockers front & rear. Otherwise you can't compete. While tires & lift may not be big expenses, regearing & locking is. Gears, rebuild kits and labor will likely run you $400 an axle, plus $600 per axle if you decide to add lockers. And that's likely a non-selectable locker. Plan on $900 per axle if you go with an ARB or Ox. Plus you need to get a better t-case in there to even consider playing on the

            3rd/4th/5th gen Hiluxes (called Toyota Pickup in some markets) and the Nissan Patrol utility pickups they don't seem to sell in the US are also excellent, affordable offroad vehicles.

        • I love it when I'm out in the woods and my buddies are gathered around an aggressive hill with their trucks and jeeps, crawling up gnarly terrain at a snails pace. Meanwhile, I tear up that same hill in about 1/100th of the time on my KTM 450XC.

      You also get better fuel economy because you don't meet the same emissions regulations, the same crash protection rating, or the same interior ammenities. And if you're getting 15mpg in a 92 F250 with a 4" lift towing a trailer, I'll bet you dollars-to-donuts that it's a diesel. Comparision fail.

    I'm an offroader.. I own a Jeep.. I do a lot of modifications to the Jeep... as such I participate in a lot of online discussion about Jeep fabrication.. There has always been people making Tomb Raider Jeeps, Jurassic Park Jeeps and endless 'military' style jeeps... some people start with an actually CJ3B and make it look like it came straigh outta WWII and some people take the newer Wranglers and make camo... The 32" tires alone make the Jeep a decent buy, I didn't read all about it, but hopefully they use the Rubicon platform for this, so the Jeep is actually somewhat capable off the shelf..

    However, I'm the Jeep enthuisast who beleive tough Jeeps are BUILT and not BOUGHT

    • Yup. The OCs among us make life more interesting. If somebody wants to extend their embrace of a game to their real-world ride, who am I to judge? We had a great "classic" car meet in town back in August and there was everything A-Z. The only thing missing was a Trabant. The word "classic" extends to cover just about anything, not just '57 chevys. Really impressive how much work people put into their machines. Several Jeeps covering a variety of models and variations with a lot of customization.

  • I have some older PS1 games that start with "Ford" or "Chevy" in the title. And then if you go waaaay back in time, you can find Atari 2600/VCS games (late 70s/early 80s) sponsored by various companies. Example: One of the games is about that giant Punch Bowl blasting through walls and saying "Oh yeah!"

      The Jeep is named after the game in this instance - not the other way around.

    Sometimes I think I should join the army, I mean its basically like an FPS but with better graphics. But what happens if I get lag out there? I'm dead! I also heard there's no respawn points in RL.

      Sure there's respawn. You just have to convert to Hinduism or Buddhism.

      Unfortunately, you drop all items, and your experience level is reset.

      • Not to mention you have to re-roll all stats, and you get slapped with a random backstory.

        Man, I've played some tough games, but RL is the biggest pain in the ass of them all.

      People scream and cry much more realistically IRL; some find this disturbing and a bit overdone. Also, their remains smell, and you actually have to move them to some sort of storage place when you tire of the sight because the fade time is measured in months. And the death animations are just ridicilous in some cases, and really break immersion with their gargling and staring (and shitting!). How this game passed any sort of review board is beyond me.
    • Also, IRL, it's really hard to shoot offscreen to reload.

    • "Rice-boy" is the American name/term. I suppose the equivalent when doing up American cars could be "McDonalds-boy"? Do we really have to try to turn everything into a racial slur though? This is nothing to do with whether or not the vehicle is American. The only people who will buy this fall into the overlap of rich/idiot/jock categories (though now that I think about it, that probably is quite a large market). It's just a black Jeep with bigger tyres and some decals.

    This particular marketing stunt has precisely one useful function... to make me feel slightly less bad about having a pre-order in for the £150 Gran Turismo 5 special edition.

    That said, at least the Wrangler does actually seem to be real. God only knows if my £10 deposit on GT5 will ever translate into anything tangible.

    • What the hell do you get in the Special Edition? It had better be a steering wheel for that price :s The "Collector's Edition" is only £60 on Amazon, and I thought it was the top edition? I've had the standard version on pre-order for around a year, I don't really care about chrome versions of cars.

      I am considering Collector's Edition just for the driving guide. One of my favourite things about the first game was that the manual taught you actual race driving techniques. Of course by now I don't reall

I wouldn't normally order something this daft, but I'm a major, long-time fan of the Gran Turismo series and even though I have quite a few misgivings about GT5, I felt I ought to push the boat out for it.

      • You're right it does look like a bare bone Rubicon; the least they could have done is add one of those Body Armor bumper to give it a more rugged look.

  • Seriously, Jeep needs to be worried more about their crappy quality and less about gimmicks. Every single person I know who bought a Wrangler ended up ditching it because of mechanical problems (about 5 people or so).

      Hmm, interesting point of view. I'd be thinking of an H3, "for that price I could have bought a tricked-out Rubicon". Well OK I drive an old Land Rover but I'd buy a Jeep over an H3, any day, all day. To each their own.
      • I'm admittedly not a truck guy and perhaps I'm missing certain facets for that reason. It was however my understanding that Jeep was infamous for over-built yet exceptionally unreliable vehicles. Capability wise the H3 (on paper) appears to outclass the Jeep on both terrain crossing, and hauling/towing. Since the Jeep seems to be a low quality base on which to build a vehicle, regardless of what tires, engine, and decals you put in/on it you're effectively putting lipstick on a pig.

          Yeah. I too opted for the mid-80s Land Rover approach. OK it's more than half the price, but it's what I want. Then again it, it doesn't have a warranty.

  • Jeep has long needed a product that could really compete with Hummer in the lucrative douchebag demographic. It seems they've found that product.

  • They'll probably try to sell a lot of the Unlimited models as 2WDs with the cheapo automatic transmission. I'm sure there's a market; it's easy to pay more than that for a far less substantial vehicle.

    But, it's probably a good move for Chrysler, considering prior to the bankruptcy, the Wrangler was one of two vehicles they actually made a profit on (the other being the Ddoge Viper).

      You can fix that. My father taught my mother how to drive a stick back in the mid-'70s. I'd like to get back to something with a manual transmission at some point. My fiancee is making noises about how she doesn't know how and wouldn't want me driving something she can't drive...never mind that you can get the basics down in maybe 5 minutes.

        There's also ergonomic issues (she's not very tall).

        But I've pretty much given up on it at this point. As I said, I have "physical issues" (I have multiple sclerosis....left leg is dodgy sometimes lately) that might prevent *me* from driving one soon.

      • I tried to teach my now ex wife to drive on my manual, I would not recommend anyone ever teach their spouse to drive manual as it will only cause stress on the relationship. Though my ex did recently indicate that she wouldn't mind me teaching her on my new car, I am hardly thinking that it would be a bright idea to teach her on it as it is new...

  • Maybe I dreamt it, but I thought that the US and Canadian government bailed out multiple US automotive manufacturers, and where told to stop be dumb-***** pissing away money on dumb products, and concentrate on improving fuel economy, emissions, and affordability in a time of economy downturn (recession or depression).

    I forget what was it in the end, something like $19 billion+ US dollars? Guess that doesn't buy much these days.

  • Most nerds who play Call of Duty: Black Ops will be too broke to buy the jeep anyway since they spend all their money upgrading their PCs to get 1FPS more on their gameplay. Anyone else is obviously not going to bother spending their hard earned cash on a vehicle which will likely be 'out of date' when the next COD comes out. This is a giant fail.

    Still, unless you can play CoD while driving, it's just not worth it.

  • This just goes to show as much as geeks want to go on about being better than the average population and not falling for such lame tricks such as religion they will still piss away untold amounts of money for any piece of junk related to their favourite game.
