    That's a 2G, not a 3G. I think the result would be the same though.

    I just checked my settings to see if I'd made a mistake, but I had not. Idle is blocked from the front page by my settings, and yet I currently see this 'story' and the 'Kind of Computer Mice' one displayed. The other one was in collapsed form, but this one is fully expanded just like a story I might be interested in, in spite of the fact that it's in the idle section.

    The kdawson block still seems to work - maybe I should just block samzenpus as well.

    I could be wrong, but isn't there a danger of the battery exploding from that kind of heat?

      Danger is in the eye of the beholder. Anyone with a solar death ray is blind to danger.

      Keep in mind who you're dealing with here: guys who build heat rays in their backyards for fun.

      To them, setting things on fire is fun. Making things explode is AWESOME.

    • I believe that the explosion risk of a Li-Ion battery is more from it being exposed to extreme electrical impetus beyond it's tolerance, and less about heat. Certainly exposing the Lithium to the water vapor in the air will cause combustion, but that's more of smolder than an explosion.

        The heat is what causes the explosion, as a side effect of the "electrical impetus". The electricity itself isn't really explosive. Heat it up sufficiently some other way, and you will have just as much of a fireball since all you need to do is kickstart the exothermic chain reaction in the lithium. There are plenty of fun videos around of this in action.

        Hopefully they remembered the "will it blend" episode with the iphone. "iPhone Smoke, don't breathe this". I did hear some coughing in the video though...

      The effects might only show up hours to a day after exposure and can be fatal.

        A pharmacological dose, probably of a salt not pure metal, would be about 20 mg/Kg. So, 100% complete consumption of less than 2 grams of Li metal would seem to be borderline safe for me. An entire iphone weighs about 100 grams, and what matters is not the weight of the phone, or even the weight of the battery, but the weight of the lithium metal inside the battery.

        Depending on exactly how stored, batteries are allowed on passenger aircraft from 8 to 25 grams of Li content, and air circulation inside a pl

          The toxicity is one thing but Lithium vapour will potentially destroy your lungs and that's a real-life danger when inhaling it, just read the data sheets.

      That would be a feature , not a bug.
      Of course then this would be a Jackass video instead of Idle video.
      The only thing that comes close to idly exploding things would be to idly watch others idly exploding things.
      Even better to idly sit by giggling as you watch some Jackass pull chunks of Iphone out of his zit collection.

    Back when calculator watches were cool, I had one die on me over the summer. I replaced it, melted the dead one with a magnifying glass, then hid it and waited until I went back to school. Then I waited more, for the right weather.

    One night I wandered into the neighboring dorm room, hair wet from the rain, acting fuzzy.

    Of course they thought I might be drunk. But I slurringly denied it. "No, I think I got hit by lightning."

    Hoots of derision. "No, really. I was walking back here, and then I... I woke up... and my watch was like this." I held up my wrist with the melted face...

    I wish I could have milked it a bit more, but I had to stop them before they called an ambulance.

  • Why do people just burn stuff they don't need anymore? It create unnecessary pollution.
    • Because nobody would watch a 3-minute video of an iPhone sitting untouched on a table somewhere ... and for some people, getting attention is their primary motivator.

      Everything that doesn't dissolve, burns eventually, even if it takes a billion years to enter a subduction zone. Ask a geologist.

      Someone not burning an iphone in front of you does not resolve you of your guilt over pollution. Its going to end up in the air/water regardless of pageviews.

        I'm pretty sure the iPhone has some recyclable parts.. Regardless of what Greenpeace says about Apple's environmental policies, they're still bound by environmental laws..

    Thinking someone ripped off this guy's video and posted it.

      Not to mention the other guy (the 100k+ views) also has part2, where he turns it over and the Li-ion battery ruptures :)

  • Over the last 40 years or so, we've seen an incredible pace of technological improvements. Sometimes I wonder if it's going to end soon. And then I see a couple of idiots burning a phone for fun that not-even three years ago sold for $600 and I know that the march of progress continues.

    Although, you must consider, the depreciation of those early iPhones is killer. $600 to kindling in three years is pretty bad.

      I guess you missed the idiots breaking an ipad on the day of release.

    I don't think the editor understands the meaning of the word "destruction." Tape that sucker to a half-stick of dynamite, touch off the dynamite, and I am quite sure that sucker will not play music.

  • Oh, how I look forward to a single day without something about the iPhone. It is as if our trillion dollar economy depended solely upon this novelty. The poor desperation of all the lost souls in the world that don't own one and never will. Come on /.ers, let's try just one day without a meaningless story about something that most people don't own and most never will.

    I just bought a new 3GS and I retired my 1st gen iPhone to "remote control status".

    It still functions as a pocket PC plus I am using a remote control app on it to control my home theater system via my WIFI.

    It still functions quite nicely as a multi-function, general purpose tool.

    Using it around the house in such capactity greatly reduces the wear and tear on my nifty new 3GS..
